Dr REKHA CHOUDHURY
Humanities are an academic discipline which deals with the study of the 'Human Condition', utilizing methodologies that are usually analytical, critical or speculative. It is the study of human culture, thought and experiences. By studying different cultures, values, customs, ideas and ways of other people, demography, places and societies humanists understand what distinguishes human beings from other species what has made our species survive and thrive and what ultimately unites us all. For all these reasons, humanities courses vary widely in scope and are available at all levels of higher secondary and college study. It is a broad category encompassing several disciplines that fall under its realm that cannot be studied under the natural sciences such as geography, economics, history, psychology, sociology, political science, etc. English as a discipline is also studies under the humanities umbrella. The approach of solving problems in humanities is somewhat different from the other streams as it involves interpretive and analytical methods as the human experience cannot be quantified using numbers and figures alone. Students who opt for this stream have a great future if they are ready for hard work and the road to a great career and success in humanities, though not easy but it can be achieved through passion, hard work and smart work. The career horizons for those who belong to this stream of study is limitless and favours the students to gain the ability to reason critically, communicate effectively and make connections across broad fields of knowledge.
